Bail Reform

Currently, indigent defendants are not represented by a public defender when initial bail decisions are made.

In 2013, the Maryland Court of Appeals found the state's bail system inherently unfair because it favors criminal defendants with the means to hire attorneys and post bond. A proposed solution -- providing public defenders to indigent defendants when all bail decisions are made -- could cost the state millions of dollars.

Housing Downturn - 5/8/14

The housing downturn that became increasingly apparent by 2006 and then worsened considerably thereafter arguably represents the primary contributor to the 2007-2008-2009 recession.  During the early years of recovery, the housing market helped to pace the economic expansion, driven in large measure by a combination of bargain basement prices and record low mortgage rates.

Blocking Health Care for the Poor

Following the Supreme Court's decision on Medicaid expansion, millions of low-income Americans are now feeling the effects.

Since the Supreme Court found that states could reject federal funding for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, 19 states have flatly rejected health care for millions of low-income Americans. The expansion is still under debate in five more states. President Obama says the reason for the rejection and the reluctance is political spite.
