Consumer Spending on Healthcare - 4/30/14

After several years of decelerating healthcare spending, consumer spending on healthcare is beginning to climb rapidly again.  According to the US Commerce Department, consumer spending on healthcare climbed by $20.4 billion at an inflation-adjusted annualized rate in February.  About $13 billion of that increase was associated with outlays on health services spurred by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.

The Balance of Sharks and Rays in the Bay

A few years ago, a massive bull shark was caught in a Chesapeake Bay tributary, creating quite a stir about "Jaws in the Potomac River."

The truth is, however, that sharks are far more likely to be prey than predator when they encounter people.

Overfishing of sharks up and down the East Coast has destabilized the balance of life in the Bay, with cownose rays multiplying -- and eating more oysters -- because there are few sharks left to eat the rays.    (Originally aired Oct. 27, 2010)

Walter Kirn found himself part of a real-life mystrery when he realized that one of his longtime friends was playing him, and everyone else, as part of an elaborate con. In "Blood Will Out: The True Story of A Murder, A Mystery and A Masquerade," Kirn tells the chilling story of his friendship with Christian Gerhartsreiter, aka Clark Rockefeller, who duped Kirn for years by pretending to be part of the Rockefeller dynasty. Gerhartsreiter was eventually arrested by the FBI in Baltimore and tried for murder. Original air date 04/02/14
