Love, Espionage, and Theremin

Tom Hall with Sean Michaels, author of the new novel “Us Conductors," about the inventor of the theremin.

The theremin is a musical instrument that you don’t actually touch to play. Its pitch and volume are guided by your hands as they move through the air between two antennas. It was invented in 1919 by a Russian scientist named Lev Sergeyvich Termen, known as Leon Theremin here in the States. Montreal writer,  Sean Michaels, found inspiration in the theremin and its creator for his debut novel, Us Conductors.  It’s a book brimming with unrequited love, international espionage, and enduring hope.

Singing to Stop an Incinerator in their Back Yard

Sisters Leah and Audrey Rozier wrote a song to protest the proposed construction of what would be the largest incinerator in the United States near  their homes in far south Baltimore.

The sisters, aged 16 and 19, want Maryland  officials to stop the construction in the Fairfield neighborhood of the Energy Answers waste-to-energy plant, which would burn pulverized garbage to generate electricity.

USA Median Wealth - 6/24/14

America remains a wealthy nation.  The latest Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report indicates that America’s average wealth exceeds $300,000 per adult, enough to rank America fourth in the world behind only Switzerland, Australia and Norway.  But that’s average wealth – the figure is misleading because it really doesn’t speak to how the middle class is doing financially.
