"12 Years A Slave": The Book That Inspired The Movie

Tom Hall talks with Dolen Perkins-Valdez about the book that inspired the film "12 Years A Slave".

The film "12 Years a Slave" is based on the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and forced into slavery. He wrote a memoir about the experience in 1853. Tom Hall talks with Dolen Perkins-Valdez, who has written an introduction for a new edition of Solomon Northup’s book.

Even five years of economic recovery have failed to lift many families out of bleak financial circumstances.  A recent Federal Reserve Board report indicates that 57 percent of those who had savings prior to 2008 used up some or all of it following the recession.
