All About the Song

While many know that The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key after the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1812, most don’t know much about the history of the song itself, or about how difficult it can be to sing it. Historian Marc Ferris explores the song’s journey to becoming our national anthem in his new book “Star Spangled Banner: The Unlikely Story of America’s National Anthem.” We’re also joined by Paul Mathews, associate dean for Academic Affairs at The Peabody Institute at The Johns Hopkins University; and Victoria McGrath, an opera singer and voice student at Peabody.

Maureen Harvie is Senior Supervising Producer for On the Record. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and joined WYPR in 2014 as an intern for the newsroom. Whether coordinating live election night coverage, capturing the sounds of a roller derby scrimmage, interviewing veterans, or booking local authors, she is always on the lookout for the next story.
