Baltimore City Schools has a new leader.  Gregory Thornton, who currently leads Milwaukee public schools, will take over the post of CEO this July.  We talk with two reporters about what to expect from his tenure.

It was announced at a press conference in Baltimore this week.  “They’ll live all over the world," said Thornton about the students.  "And it is our job to make them competitive no matter where they go, that they can stand up real tall and real proud and stick those chests out—I'm from Baltimore city public schools!”

Gregory Thornton has roots on the East Coast, and ties to Maryland—he grew up in Philadelphia, received his Master’s degree in administration from Salisbury University on the Eastern Shore, and worked for a period in Montgomery County schools.

Sheilah Kast talks about the challenges he faces here is Erica Green, Education Reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and with Erin Richards, Education Reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, who’s been following Greg Thornton there.

Sheilah Kast is the host of On The Record, Monday-Friday, 9:30-10:00 am.
