Budget Cuts For Baltimore's Public Schools

alamosbasement / Creative Commons

Baltimore teachers, students, and parents are on pins and needles this week, waiting to see the impact of budget cuts on the city’s public schools. Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Gregory Thornton has been working since he took over last summer to close a $108 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year that begins July 1st; last month, Governor Hogan announced he would not release $68 million that the legislature had allocated for schools, including $11.6 million that would have gone to Baltimore city. In the past two weeks, over 200 city school employees have been let go, mostly from the central office – and more layoffs may be coming.

With us to talk about it is Bebe Verdery, Education Reform Director of the ACLU of Maryland. Also with us is Will McKenna, Executive Director of Afya Baltimore, a nonprofit that runs Tunbridge and Afya Public Charter Schools in North Baltimore city.

Audio for this segment will be available by the end of the day.

Sheilah Kast is the host of On The Record, Monday-Friday, 9:30-10:00 am.
