Connections Between The Civil Rights Movement And Black Lives Matter

What is the lineage between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and the Black Lives Matter Movement of today? Both movements focus on racial justice but the Black Lives Matter Movement prides itself on being a broad and inclusive movement that is not led by any one particular person. The Civil Rights Movement is largely characterized as being led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Blacks Lives Matter sprang up following the death of Trayvon Martin in 2012. Many civil rights leaders have said they were inspired to join the movement following the murder of Emmett Till in 1955. How are the movements similar strategically, philosophically, and emotionally? How is the Black Lives Matter Movement using social media to galvanize people across the country?

Ralph Eugene Moore is a longtime Baltimore activist who recently stepped down as Program Manager at Restoration Gardens, a residence for formerly homeless youth. DeRay McKesson is active in the Black Lives Matter movement. He’s the Interim Chief Human Capital Officer in the Baltimore City Public School System, and the co-founder of Campaign Zero, which focuses on police reform. They will be speaking about the shared stories of the Black Lives Matter Movement and the Civil Rights Movement tomorrow Oct. 12 at St. Bartholomew’s Church. The event starts at 7pm.

On October 24th the National NAACP president Cornell William Brooks will talk about the Black Lives Matter movement at McDaniel College. Doors open at 7pm. Find information about the event here.
