Doctors and Medical Testing

In an effort to reduce the number of unnecessary tests and treatments that inflate health-care costs nationwide, some prestigious medical groups have joined the "Choosing Wisely" campaign, which recommends that American doctors weigh the costs, not just the effectiveness, of treatments for their patients. Our guest: Dr. Barry Meisenberg, an oncologist and leader in quality-of-care innovations at Anne Arundel Medical Center; he says patients are not served by adding expense for the expectation of little clinical benefit.

The "Choosing Wisely" campaign encourages doctors to weigh the pros and cons of medical tests like CT scans with their patients before having these types of tests performed.
