The UN estimates that, over the past year, more than 380,000 men, women and children have fled war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa, traveling to Europe in search of a better life. The response to the crisis has been mixed. While Hungary has erected a fence to keep asylum seekers out, Germany may accept as many as 1 million refugees.
How will Europe find room for the thousands of refugees who may be never be able to return home? What will happen to those who do not qualify for asylum? How should the US respond to the crisis? Courtland Robinson, assistant professor at the Center for Refugee and Disaster Response at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, provides contextfor the crisis.
