Survivors Of Domestic Violence: Why They Stay, Why They Leave

Last spring, shortly after University of Maryland law professor Leigh Goodmark had published a book about domestic violence, she talked with us about one of her main points: that the legal system often forces victims of domestic violence into decisions they feel  aren't best for them or their families.  We thought of that conversation this week with the intense focus on the video of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocking his then-fianceJanay Palmer unconscious in an elevator last winter.  We wanted to get Professor Goodmark's perspective on the response the new disclosure has drawn. She joins Sheilah in the studio.

The Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence has a list of resources available to those experiencing domestic violence. You can find them here. Here's our interview with Leigh Goodmark about her book, “A Troubled Marriage: Domestic Violence and the Legal System".

Sheilah Kast is the host of On The Record, Monday-Friday, 9:30-10:00 am.
