The signs are ubiquitous in Penn North, plastered on boarded-up houses, and emblazoned on tee shirts. They are carried by children and adults alike at marches throughout some of Baltimore’s most troubled neighborhoods and beyond. They read, simply, We must stop killing each other. That's the rallying cry of the 300 Men March, a group organized in 2013 by Brandon Scott, the Baltimore City councilman from the 2nd District, and by Munir Bahar, our first guest this morning. Bahar is also the Executive Director of Committed Organized Responsible (COR), a community health organization that supports exercise and good health among young people.
The name300 Men March was inspired by the movie 300, which told the story of how three hundred Spartans died battling a much larger Persian army at the ancient Battle of Thermopylae. The larger "army" that the 300 Men March is up against is the epidemic of violence afflicting communities of color. Munir Bahar joins Maryland Morning to talk about his work, and his hopes for an end to the killing.
