A young jazz saxophonist based in New York City, Sarah Hanahan is a generational talent on the rise. Sarah was featured in the first-ever class of NPR Jazz Night in America’s Youngbloods alongside Samara Joy, Immanuel Wilkins, Isaiah J. Thompson, and Sean Mason. The series features “five up-and-coming jazz geniuses who are revolutionizing their genre” - all of whom are under the age of 30. Her debut album, Among Giants (2024), earned critical acclaim, including a 5-star review in DownBeat magazine and placement in their Top Albums of the Year list in 2024 and 2025. In 2025, Hanahan was named DownBeat’s #1 Rising Star Alto Saxophonist and ranked #9 overall alto saxophonist in the DownBeat Readers Poll—placing her alongside legends such as Kenny Garrett and Gary Bartz and further cementing her status as one of the leading voices of her generation.

Sarah has had the privilege of studying and working with many renowned musicians including Jeff “Tain” Watts, Abraham Burton, Nat Reeves, Peter Martin, Emmet Cohen, Steve Davis, Billy Hart, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Billy Drummond, Marc Cary, and has toured with Joe Farnsworth, Peter Martin, Ulysses Owens Jr. & Generation Y, and Sherrie Miracle & the Diva Orchestra. She also had the opportunity to play for the 2023 NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert at the Kennedy Center honoring Sue Mingus with the Grammy award-winning Mingus Dynasty Band.

Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's Summer Camp at The Studio
This summer the PLAY's the thing with summer camps at The Studio! Your child’s imagination will take the spotlight at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. Each week, kids will explore Shakespeare’s language, create characters, jump into stage combat and clowning and learn confidence and creativity before creating a final staged presentation. Between 1946 and 1953, Henri Matisse created 28 lithographic portraits for Poésies Antillaises (Antillean Poetry), a book of poems by John-Antoine Nau. Published posthumously in 1972, this rare volume remains one of Matisse’s least-known illustrated works.

Inspired by his brief 1930 visit to Martinique, Matisse translated Nau’s evocative poems—celebrating travel, music, and oceanic landscapes—into vibrant portraits. These reflect the artist’s collaborations with notable Caribbean and international models and are presented alongside works by two leading artists from Martinique and Guadeloupe, Germaine Casse and Serge Hélénon. This focus exhibition illuminates aspects of the transatlantic artistic circles active during the late French colonial period.

Maryland Art Place, in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore, is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Maryland-based artist, Roo Taylor. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo, located at 24 West Franklin St. from April 17 - July 17.
A public reception will take place on Wednesday, April 22 from 5 PM to 7 PM.

About the Artist:
Roo Taylor (b. 2003) is a Baltimore-based artist originally from Denver, Colorado. She earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and is currently a resident artist at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore. Working primarily with high-flow acrylic paint and acrylic ink, Taylor uses transparency and layered color to create abstract landscapes. Her work explores the interplay between the natural world and human relationships, exploring the emotional and atmospheric depth through fluid, natural spaces. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries across Baltimore, Denver and New York, as well as internationally at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art in Japan.

Using light and color as metaphors for energy, Roo Taylor’s work traces the through lines between the natural world and human connection. Rooted in a deep reverence for transparency and hue, each piece is meant to reflect on the connection between feeling and form. Taylor invites viewers to experience emotional resonance as something inherently natural, alive, layered, and luminous.

The Highlandtown First Friday Art Walk is a free, self-guided walking tour of arts venues, exhibitions, performances, pop-up shops, and more! The neighborhood comes alive with incredible talent, vibrant vendors, and inspiring creations from local makers. Local businesses team up with DJs, musicians, and artists to turn the evening into a full-on celebration—come out, explore, get inspired, and be part of the fun!

Highlandtown hosts its Art Walk on the first Friday of every month, with the exception of January and July. Specific event details, such as participating venues and artists, are posted on our website: ihearthighlandtown.com and on our social media: @highlandtownarts on FB and IG.
