For thousands of years, East Asia’s cultures have viewed human life as part of a much larger system that encompasses the natural world. Drawn from the BMA’s collection, this exhibition boasts more than 40 objects—from magnificent ink drawings to beautifully crafted stoneware and poignant contemporary photographs and prints. They bring into the galleries the mountains and seas, wild and supernatural animals, and plant life that are extensive across East Asian imagery and often carry symbolic meaning.

Works on view include robust 13th-century ceramic vessels, delicate porcelain, carved jade, intricately sewn textiles, and large-scale photography; collectively, these artworks represent the impulse to fully understand the natural world as foundational to our existence, as shaped by human life, and as an enduring metaphor of survival.

How have recent upheavals—from the pandemic to global conflicts, amplified by media—reshaped our private lives? How do personal memories become collective history? In a world forever changed, how do we find our way forward? Elaine Qiu’s awe-inspiring installation of painting, video, and sound invites visitors into a multi-sensory exploration of communal consciousness, connection, and healing in a fragmented, post-pandemic world.

The work in this exhibition compresses and expands expectations of depth as moderated by a post-image visual culture. The artists adhere to neither medium nor dimensional restrictions, but manipulate the viewer’s relationship to the image as a temporal document, compressed and fractured, through the singular eye of the lens. This expectation, no longer warranted in the age of computer generated images, becomes a fallacy of both the eye and of the language used to comprehend it. The image is untethered from representation and logical spatial association. Spatial continuity and discontinuity run amok in playful fracture--the work pushes and prods the amorphous opening left in the wake of this rupture; what was flat is unmoored of grounding, what was solid is now compressed.

2nd Annual Rotunda Rocks Returns to Hampden Neighborhood this Spring
Family-friendly Night of Rockin’ Fun Begins May 3 and Runs Every Friday Until End of September

Whether you like to jam to rock, folk, blues, Indie, Latin or reggae, there is something for everyone as the second annual Rotunda Rocks concert series returns to Hampden this spring/summer (711 W 40th Street). This family-friendly FREE concert series, presented by MCB Real Estate, features live music on the plaza and a street festival atmosphere with delicious local food and drinks, fun games and local vendors on Fridays, 6-9 p.m. beginning May 3 and running until September 27. Rotunda Rocks is open to the public and welcomes families and pets. A portion of proceeds from beverage sales benefits the Maryland SPCA. Bob Baldwin is an American Pianist/Composer/Arranger/Radio Host/Inventor. Bob Baldwin has proven to be one of the most ubiquitous and ingenious chameleons of Contemporary Jazz - both in his own projects and those he has endeavored upon for others - for which he’s been coined by industry peers as the “Ray Charles of Contemporary Jazz”. His Radio program, NewUrbanJazz, established in 2008, celebrated its’ 700th consecutive weekly radio program on February 28, 2022.

The Nevermore Haunt features unique creatures, characters and scenes inspired by late 19th century Baltimore.

Come face-to-face with mangled, undead factory workers, the ghosts of drowned sailors, unlicensed medical practitioners and strange, terrifying monsters inside this historic 140 year-old property in Baltimore’s Old Town.

One of Maryland’s scariest haunted houses and a Baltimore Halloween tradition since 2016, The Nevermore Haunt also features spectacular sideshow performance and an outdoor bar featuring local beers and custom cocktails.

This haunting work follows the youthful love of Giselle and Albrecht, his betrayal of her for another, and her forgiveness for him from beyond the grave. Featuring rustic peasants and vindictive spirits who dance men to their deaths, Giselle is an audience-favorite story about the power of love and mercy. Join us for an acoustic/electric concert celebrating one of the most iconic songwriters of all time.

DC-based band Jackie and The Treehorns will head up this jam-packed tribute concert to legendary iconoclast Neil Young. From Neil's work with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY to his raucous feedback entrenched garage rock heyday(s) with Crazy Horse, you can expect to hear "the hits" as well as some of his deeper cuts.

The show will kick off with solo acoustic tunes and slowly transition into the rootsier side of Neil's early 70's work before fulling plugging in and kicking out the jams Crazy Horse style. From "Sugar Mountain" and "Old Man" to "Cinnamon Girl" and "Rockin In the Free World" casual to hardcore Neil fans will not leave disappointed.

"Singer/songwriter Neil Young is sometimes visionary, sometimes flaky, sometimes both at once, but he has never been boring. Indeed, Neil Young has weathered runs of critical and popular ambivalence only to be vindicated by being periodically "rediscovered" by young musicians and fans. He has maintained a large following since the early '70s with music in three basic styles — solo acoustic ballads, sweet country rock, and lumbering garage rock (with some experimental music side trips), all topped by his high voice — and he veers from one to another in unpredictable phases. His subject matter also shifts from personal confessions to allusive stories to bouncy throwaways. A dedicated primitivist, Young is constantly proving that simplicity is not always simple."
