Street collapse: Engineers hired by Baltimore City found no major defects beneath N. Charles and St. Paul Streets near 26th Street after parts of that street collapsed onto CSX tracks. The city Department of Transportation released the results of sonar tests yesterday afternoon. Also, the Baltimore Sun reports that it was still unclear who is responsible for repairing the retaining wall that collapsed.
Legislative prayer: Carroll County commissioners are expected to discuss the issue of legislative prayer today. The meeting comes after the U.S. Supreme Court gave its okay this week to saying prayers at public meetings in a case from New York state. Within hours of that decision, a Baltimore federal judge lifted his order banning sectarian prayers at Carroll County commissioner meetings. The Carroll County Times has more.
Morgan State rally: Students at Morgan State University are united in calling for the return of more than 270 abducted Nigerian schoolgirls. Nearly 200 people on campus held an energetic rally yesterday to sing, give speeches, recite poems and prayers. WJZ has more.
Roberts charged: The girlfriend of a relative of the mayor of Annapolis is accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill a witness. Police say Stacie Roberts met with a detective posing as an outlaw motorcycle gang member last week. The 33-year-old allegedly offered to pay $1,600 in cash and prescription pills to keep a star witness from appearing in court to testify against her boyfriend. Roberts' boyfriend is Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides' cousin, Savvas Pantelides, who is awaiting trial in a robbery and attempted murder case. The Capital Gazette has more.
Barksdale plea: Nathan Barksdale, who claims the role of a gang leader on the TV show, "The Wire," is based on him, is on his way back to prison. The 53-year-old Barksdale, who had been working for the anti-violence organization Safe Streets, pleaded guilty in January to heroin distribution and agreed to a new three-and-a-half year sentence. Cardin absences: Baltimore County Del. Jon Cardin issued a response to a Baltimore Sun story reporting that he ducked dozens of committee votes during the most recent legislative session. The 44-year-old, who is running for state attorney general, failed to show up for nearly three-quarters of votes taken in the House Ways and Means Committee. The Sun has his full statement here.
Baltimore baseball: Adam Jones homered twice and the Baltimore Orioles took the middle test of a three-game set from the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3, on Wednesday.
