A look at some of the results from yesterday's primary election.
The Maryland Board of Elections says that just over 20% of eligible voters cast ballots in the primary election. And while not all those ballots have been counted and the results are not yet official, those results are mostly clear. You can take a look at all the results here. A brief overview follows:
Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown cruised to an easy victory in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. Brown pulled in a little more than 51% of the vote -- more than twice the tally of his chief rivals. Second-place finisher Doug Gansler had about 24%, with Heather Mizeur drawing the support of nearly 22% of Democratic voters. Brown will face Republican Larry Hogan in the general election; Hogan won about 43% of the GOP vote, handily beating David Craig, who had about 29%. Charles Lollar's gubernatorial campaign brought in about 15%, with Ron Gorge drawing 12% of Republican voters. WYPR’s Christopher Connolly and Karen Hosler have this report. Democrat Brian Frosh won his party's nomination to be the next Maryland Attorney General. The State Senator pulled in just under 50% of the vote, beating out Delegate Jon Cardin, who had 30%, and Delegate Aisha Braveboy, who had 20%. Republican attorney Jeffrey Pritzker ran unopposed in the primary and will be the underdog to Frosh in the November general election. WYPR’s Joel McCord and Kenneth Burns have more.
In Anne Arundel County, Delegate Steve Schuh won the Republican nomination for County Executive with about 54% of the vote, ousting incumbent Laura Neuman. Following her defeat, Neuman said she would not run for public office again.
In Frederick County, voters got to pick County Executive candidates for the first time... as the jurisdiction switches to a charter form of government. Democrat Jan Gardner ran unopposed for her party's nomination; current head of the Frederick County Commissioners Blaine Young handily won the Republican nomination.
Baltimore City State's Attorney Gregg Bernstein has been limited to one term. Bernstein lost his bid for re-election yesterday to challenger Marilyn Mosby. Mosby took nearly 55% of the vote.
Republican State Senate leader David Brinkley lost his bid for re-election in the 4th District. Delegate Michael Hough won the race, bringing in 2 votes for every 1 vote Brinkley won.
The contested race for State Senate in the 42nd District sees incumbent Democrat Jim Brochin leading challenger Connie DeJuliis (who had the support of Governor Martin O'Malley); Brochin has about 70% of the vote.
In District 45, incumbent State Senator Nathaniel McFadden handily fended off a challenge from Julius Henson; McFadden pulled in more than 80% of the vote.
And in Anne Arundel County: Republican Delegate Don Dwyer appears to be losing his bid for re-election; currently trailing 5 other candidates. Dwyer has had a difficult time over the past couple of years with drunken boating and drunk driving convictions.
