Eclipse fever

Mary Rose Madden

The moon’s shadow swept across the sun Monday afternoon, totally obscuring it in some parts of the country, and blotting out about 80 percent of it Maryland. It was the first coast to coast solar eclipse in the US in a century and thousands turned out in Baltimore to catch a glimpse.

They headed for rooftops or gathered at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore. The used telescopes with special filters and special glasses. Or, they watched with homemade contraptions, like the cereal boxes Evan Lingenfelder and his mom, Beth Sherring, used outside her office in Fells Point to catch the eclipse. And despite the clouds and threatening weather, they actually saw at least some of the eclipse.
