Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport continues to fly high. The airport grew passenger traffic by 2.9 percent to 27.1 million in 2018, marking its fourth straight record year.
BWI's growth keeps it ahead of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport as the region's busiest airport. Dulles saw nearly 24.1 million passengers pass through its gates in 2018, making it the second busiest airport in the Baltimore-Washington region. BWI has seen a boon in new international carriers and low-fare domestic airlines in recent years. Spirit Airlines, for example, has added new five new routes out of BWI in 2019. The airport's dominant carrier, Southwest Airlines Co., is also plotting an expansion at BWI in anticipation of expected growth.
