University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking state approval for its plans to build a $194.3 million cancer center for its Baltimore campus, citing a dramatic rise in demand.
The hospital recently filed a certificate of need application with the Maryland Health Care Commission detailing plans for the renovation of 73,000 square feet of existing space and the construction of a nine-story, 155,000-square-foot addition to the medical center at 22 S. Greene St. The health care commission is tasked with reviewing UMMC's project plans for compliance with state regulations. The project must be approved by the state before it can move forward. The project will be funded through a combination of state grants, totaling about $125 million, as well as philanthropic donations and medical system funds. Notably, local car dealer Leonard Stoler and his wife, Roslyn, have already gifted $25 million toward the expansion project. That gift was the largest philanthropic donation in the 195-year history of the medical center.
