Danyell Irby
Executive Director, NewsDanyell Irby was named the Executive Director of news at Your Public Radio (WYPR) in February of 2020. In this role she also served as Executive Editor of the station's well-received podcast, The Daily Dose, created to meet the demand for a calm, factual daily wrap of health reporting and other news during the early days of the pandemic. She is a leader in WYPR’s newsroom collaboration with our reporting partner, The Baltimore Banner.
Ms. Irby earned her master’s degree from The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park 2001, while working as the first full-time overnight producer on NPR’s news desk.
Ms. Irby rose through the ranks of NPR in numerous roles including anchor, editor and newscast senior supervising producer. In her role as Supervising Editor of the Local Impact of War Project, she traveled to numerous NPR member station newsrooms across the country mentoring and editing reporters covering the impact of multiple deployments on National Guard Troops and their families. Ms. Irby spent several years on NPR’s national desk as a Supervising Editor for the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic Regions. Prior to taking on the leadership role at WYPR, she worked in television and at American Public Media as a senior editor for their flagship program, Marketplace.
Ms. Irby continues mentoring journalism students and has received numerous industry recognitions and awards for her work.
