Today, on the Checkup, we look at Accountable Care Organizations, or ACOs. Those are groups of independent providers in a particular community who join together to coordinate care—and to save money. ACOs can include hospitals, physicians, and specialists.
A subsidiary of the state medical association, MedChi Network Services, operates three of the ACOs in Maryland. Craig Behm is the executive director who oversees them. We talk with him, along with Adam Weinstein a nephrologist based in Easton. He’s the medical director of one of those ACOs, the Maryland Accountable Care Organization of Eastern Shore.
Our series ‘The Checkup: How Health Care Is Changing in Maryland’ is made possible by grants from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the Baltimore Association of Health Underwriters, and HealthCare Access Maryland.
