Night at the Morgan State Opera

When many people think of Morgan State University, they think of the famed Morgan Choir.  Under the direction of the late Dr. Nathan Carter, the choir toured the world, and established itself as one of the great musical ambassadors for Morgan and for the state of Maryland.  Its current director, Dr. Eric Conway, has continued the revered tradition of the Morgan Choir, and over the last few seasons, a newer tradition of grand opera performance has also taken hold at Morgan.
Vincent Stringer is the Artistic Director and Producer of Opera @ Morgan, and next month, he will direct some of the school’s finest vocalists in performances of Puccini’s Suor Angelica.  The Puccini work will be paired with another famous one-act opera, The Devil and Daniel Webster, by the American composer Douglas Moore.  That opera will be directed by Dwight R.B. Cook, a well-known theater artist and the Director of Production at Morgan. Vincent Stringer and Dwight R.B. Cook join Tom Hall in the studio to talk about it.

The shows open on April 10th and run through April 12th.  There’s a Town Hall Meeting tonight in conjunction with the operas.  It’s entitled, Profit or Penance: The Price for Your Soul.  A panel of clergy, community leaders and scholars will be moderated by Rev. Bernard Keels, the director of the University Chapel at Morgan.  It starts at 7:00 in the Turpin-Lamb Theater in the Murphy Fine Arts Center on the Morgan Campus.Audio for this segment will be available by the end of the day.

Host, Midday (M-F 12:00-1:00)
