Former U.S. Senator Joseph Tydings died last week at age 90. He spoke, On the Record, just two months before -- sharing memories of growing up in a family both wealthy and politically connected. As a young delegate in Annapolis Tydings threw himself into campaigning for presidential hopeful Jack Kennedy, and that shaped Tydings' own future, first as U.S. Attorney for Maryland, then as U.S. Senator. Tydings said dirty tricks cost him re-election--and yet he wrote the book, "My Life in Progressive Politics: Against the Grain," he said, to send a message to his grandchildren to pursue public service.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the University of Maryland Memorial Chapel in College Park.
