Women’s History Month is U.S. History Series Salutes Dr. Joyce Elders

There is a long list of outstanding women leaders that have helped our nation stay relatively healthy. Women’s History Month is an excellent time to pay tribute to those women who have championed the road toward improving the health of the nation. The GOOD News is that the first African American woman to be named as the Surgeon General of the United States was Dr. Joyce Elders.

Dr. Chavis is African American civil rights leader and icon, United Church of Christ (UCC) ordained minister, author, journalist, organic chemist, environmentalist, global entrepreneur, and currently President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) based in Washington, DC since 2014.
