The Freedom to Read Act, which passed both chambers of the state legislature this month, will go into effect as an emergency measure to protect librarians and the books they put on their shelves.

The American Library Association reports increasing attempts to remove books from libraries nationwide. In Carroll County schools, more than 50 books were removed from shelves after sustained pressure from local chapters of the national Moms for Liberty group.
