The Baltimore Police Department is calling for an internal investigation of officers who apparently ignored reports of an armed man who ditched a gun. The video footage of the incident was recorded on a city firefighter’s dash camera.

The dash cam video shows a man in a white T-shirt and black shorts crossing in front of the firefighters’ car at St. Paul Street and Lexington Avenue with a hand gun in his waistband about 2:30 a.m. July 6. The man then tries to conceal the gun.

“Oh he just threw it!” says one firefighter. “He just threw it in the bushes.”

“He probably just did a shooting,” says another.

It is unclear who the man was or what he did with the gun prior to crossing the firefighters’ path. The firefighters called 9-1-1 twice, but police failed to respond. Finally, the firefighters drove by the District Court Commissioners’ office in the 500 block of North Calvert Street where they saw an officer who brushed them off.

“This isn’t my district,” she tells the firefighters.

“Okay just letting you know,” one of them responds.

Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle called the lack of action intolerable and totally unacceptable.

“At the end of the day I don’t care who you are or where you are in the city everybody in the city deserves a police service that is responsive,” said Tuggle at a press conference Monday afternoon. “And if we’re not doing our jobs then we need to be called to account.”

Officers discovered a gun in the bushes later that day. Tuggle has not said what might happen to the officers who did not respond.
