Baltimore County Councilwoman Cathy Bevins Monday night was tapped to be the chairwoman of the council for the coming year. Democrats control the council and take turns being chair.

Republican Councilman Todd Crandell took issue with the fact that the chairmanship is decided in advance by the Democrats on the council.

"No Republican is even mentioned," Crandell said. "We're not brought into the conversation. It is not a bipartisan process."

No matter, Crandell joined the other six council members in voting for Bevins to be the chair for 2020. There are four Democrats and three Republicans on the council.

This is the third time Bevins has served as chair since she was first elected to the council in 2010.

"I don't take this position lightly, so thank you so much," Bevins told council members. "I look forward to working with the administration and with County Executive John Olszewski."

Council members applauded Bevins for being tenacious. She recently cast a key vote on council requiring most landlords to accept housing vouchers, also known as Section 8. Bevins received threats and for a time had police protection at her home.

"Councilwoman Bevins always lets you know where she stands," Republican Councilman David Marks said. "She's taken on some difficult issues."

Bevins replaces Councilman Tom Quirk as chair of the county council.
