Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, consultant, wife of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings and former chair of the Maryland Democratic Party is running against dozens of candidates who wish to be Maryland's next 7th district congressperson. The special primary is February 4th.

If elected, Cummings intends to bring an “equitable development” plan to Baltimore.

She said she wants to, “introduce a policy to renovate and promote home ownership in these vacant houses.” She stressed a partnership with the federal, state and local governments.

By stimulating economic growth in the city’s impoverished neighborhoods, she said, people who have struggled with wage growth or wage gaps will have a new source of capital.

Cummings wants to address Baltimore’s “tale of two cities”, to eradicate the violence and trauma that go hand in hand with extreme poverty.

But, she cautioned, that the development must by intentional and thoughtful.

“What we don’t want to happen is super gentrification  - where people are displaced and the housing becomes unaffordable and then you have re-segration patterns.”

Cummings said she would get the district 7 the economic boost it needs– making sure residents in the toughest neighborhoods benefit.
