Council Pushes for Diversity in City School's Taskforce

Baltimore City Public Schools

Baltimore City Council President Jack Young will introduce a resolution at Monday night's city council meeting to hold a hearing on Baltimore City Public School’s Enrollment Taskforce.

CEO of Schools Sonja Santelises designed the 22-member taskforce to focus on declining enrollment numbers, but Young says the taskforce lacks council and parent representation.

“So I think the parents should be engaged and I think a member of this council should be on that taskforce as well," says Young.

In a school board meeting earlier this month Santelises announced the taskforce saying the school system would devise an initiative to increase enrollment numbers based on the panel’s recommendations. Young says the taskforce also lacks diversity, with very little representation from the Hispanic community.

“Don’t forget we have part of their budget that is part of city government that my council will be hearing on in May," says Young.

The council is expected to review the city school’s $275 million budget and meet with CEO Santelises to discuss how the council could become involved in the decision making later this month.
