Sometimes, a company just gets hot. Everything they do turns into an economic winner, enriching owners in the process. Such is the story of Universal Pictures, the movie studio owned by Comcast. The studio recently passed the 5 billion mark at the worldwide box office faster than any other studio in history during a single calendar year.
As reported by CNNMoney, the studio’s record pace is attributable to a string of blockbuster hits, including February’s Fifty Shades of Grey, April’s Furious Seven, May’s Pitch Perfect Two, June’s Jurassic World and this month’s Minions. Each of those films opened number one at the Box Office with Fifty Shades of Grey, Furious Seven and Jurassic World all registering record debuts for the months during which the films opened.
Of its five billion dollars in box office revenues, nearly two thirds were generated outside of the United States. By itself, Jurassic World broke the six hundred million mark at the U.S. box office after just thirty-six days of release. Of twenty fifteen’s top ten films, five are from Universal. Last year, Universal had just one film in the top twenty – Neighbors.
