Where To Celebrate This July 4th

www.baltimore.to

July 4th weekend is upon us – you may be planning a cook out or going to a cook out or thinking about a cook out. Well, we wanted to help you expand your options a bit. We’ve put together a few events happening on Saturday across Maryland.

There’s no better way to celebrate our country’s independence than by staring at burning powders streaking across the summer night sky. The big fireworks extravaganza in Baltimore tomorrow is at the Inner Harbor at 9:30. Festivities begin at 7 with a performance by The United States Navy Band Cruisers at the Inner Harbor Amphitheater at the corner of Pratt and Light streets. You’ll be able to catch the fireworks from there as well, of course. You’ll also have a good vantage point in Federal Hill, Fell’s Point, Harbor East, or your roof.

Some of you may be escaping to the coast this weekend. Ocean City has got you covered on the fireworks front as well. Their July 4th celebration will kick off with a free concert at 8 at the N. Division Street Beach. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on the beach to catch the fireworks at 9:30.

If you’re looking for something to do during the day, Frederick has you covered. July 4th festivities at Baker Park in downtown Frederick begin at noon with a reading of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence. There will be musical performances throughout the day, lots of food, games for the kids, and, to top it off, fireworks shoot off at dusk.

And off course, Washington DC has a slew of celebrations this weekend as well. The MARC’s Penn Line will run on its normal Saturday schedule. Fares recently bumped up a bit – a ticket from Penn Station to Union Station will now run you $8. Once you’re there, the National Independence Day Parade will kick off at 11:45 and will run along Constitution Avenue between 7th and 17th streets. Marching bands from across the country will be there, along with equestrian and drill teams.

And, on the U.S. Capitol’s West Lawn, a free 90-minute performance by the National Symphony Orchestra will include Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with live cannon fire. That’s at 8 p.m. Fireworks on the national mall usually start shortly after 9.

Host, Midday (M-F 12:00-1:00)
Sheilah Kast is the host of On The Record, Monday-Friday, 9:30-10:00 am.
