Youth Violence in Baltimore

Najee Thomas, 14, Keith Powell, 17, Timothy Hall, 15, and Adrian Gilliard, 17, were all murdered this year in Baltimore. One wanted to be a lawyer. Another a bike mechanic. And all of them had been a part of University of Maryland Baltimore County's Choice Program, designed to support “at-risk” youth so that they have a better chance at success. Our guest this hour is Choice Program Director LaMar Davis. Since these deaths occurred, he’s been thinking about youth violence in the city—and the underlying problems that contribute to it. Why all too often young, poor black men are especially vulnerable, with the expectation that they will fail, go to jail, or die trying.
